What Scientists Got Wrong about Red Meat’s Affect On Your Health

For some time scientists have been saying if your diet is high in red meat the chances are high you’re going to get sick and die.

The verbiage wasn’t quite that simple, but it’s pretty much the basic gyst of things.

According to many reports, the associations between red meat and cancer were consistent. But then scientists went back to look at the data and came away with a different set of conclusions.

Red meat actually isn’t harmful.

According to the Mayo clinic: “Red meat. About 100 grams (roughly the size of a deck of cards) a day was not associated with a higher risk for heart disease and only a slightly higher (but not statistically significant) risk for diabetes.”

And Eating well noted

In a new Australian study, women who reported eating 1 to 2 ounces of beef or lamb a day were half as likely to have major depression or anxiety disorder compared to those who ate less than 1 ounce daily. That may be because beef and lamb in Australia are typically grass-fed, “which means their meat is higher in omega-3 fatty acids, which appear to be protective against anxiety and depression,” says lead author Felice Jacka, Ph.D., of Deakin University’s School of Medicine.

In fact, there are 3 other reasons red meat is far healthier than they could have imagined.

  1. Contains High Levels of Vitamin B-12: Unlike a plant based diet, Red meat actually contains vitamin B-12 which is essential for the healthy function of the human body. Vitamin B-12 is required in the methylation process, and the methylation process is absolutely essential for proper regulation of many of your body’s natural functions.Without B-12 you could begin to develop a series of problems including Pulmonary Embolism, Addictive Behavior, Insomnia, Autism,  Down’s syndrome, Frequent miscarriages, Bipolar or Manic Depression, Atherosclerosis or more.

    Red meat is one of the best sources of B-12 on the planet. It’s a nutrient that’s very difficult to get from plant sources, and to get B-12 from vegetables would require pounds upon pounds of plant food a day.

  2. Has Vitamin K2: Vitamin K2 is another vitamin that you simply can’t get from plants. And it’s one of the most important vitamins for the the development of bones as well as to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.Vitamin K2 works with Vitamin D as well as calcium and magnesium to help ensure that bones grow effectively.  It also has been shown to help fight inflammation as well as works to keep your brain healthy.
  3. Is High in Omega-3s: As noted in the Australian study, red meat (grass fed) is very high in Omega-3s. Much more so than conventionally grown meat. The other caveat to this is Omega-3s found in meat are the best kind of Omega-3s for the human body.Plant sources of Omega-3 contain ALA (alpha linoleic acid) which can’t be used all that effectively by your body. On the other hand, the type of Omega-3s found in red meat (and fish) are DHA/EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid). This form of Omega-3 is the kind your body uses to help fight inflammation, protect your heart, and boost brain activity.

    Your body cannot convert ALA to DHA/EPA with effectiveness, so it must get it from animals that do. And red meat is the right answer.

Now all of this being said, there are some problems with red meat.

This is where scientists got it right.

When red meat comes from conventional farming methods it is high in inflammatory fats like Omega-6. These fats can cause inflammation in the body which could potentially cause cancer, heart disease, and other health problems.

Likewise animals that have been treated with hormones and antibiotics can transfer those chemicals into you body which can also create problems.

But if you eat read meat, have a healthy diet high in vegetables, and stay away from fake processed foods you should be fine.

One thing you might not understand is there’s a particular “health food” that actually isn’t all that healthy at all.
