People are now experiencing premature aging of their hair at much younger ages than before. In fact, people in their twenties and thirties are finding gray hairs. Scientists blame a variety of causes, from stress, sinusitis, poor nutrition, fluctuating hormones, thyroid disorders, and chronic colds to genetic predisposition.
Natural health experts say there is a way to reverse premature graying. Here are the remedies they recommend:
1. Indian Gooseberry
This fruit is also known as Amia. It has potent anti-aging properties. You can eat it or apply amia pulp or oil directly on the hair. Simply mix some of the dried or powdered fruit into coconut oil or almond oil, and apply. Leave on overnight.
2. Curry Leaves
A mix of curry leaves and coconut oil stimulates hair pigmentation. To prepare, pour a tablespoon of the oil in a pan and add a few fresh curry leaves. Boil them until they are charred, stir and apply the mixture to the hair. Leave on 30 to 45 minutes, then rinse.
Henna will darken your hair, but did you know it also conditions and strengthens? Mix up a paste of ground henna leaves, one tablespoon of coffee powder, 3 tablespoons of Indian gooseberry powder, and a little plain yogurt. Spread the mixture throughout your hair and allow to dry, then rinse and shampoo.
4. Lemon Juice and Coconut Oil
Coconut oil on its own adds luster and flights infections, as well as moisturizing and supporting hair growth. Try mixing three tablespoons of lemon juice in coconut oil. Apply the mix to your hair and massage well. After an hour, shampoo your hair.
5. Sage and Rosemary
Sage and rosemary both help darken gray hair. Add half a cup of dried leaves of herbs to 2 cups of water and boil. Leave them to steep for several hours. Strain the mixture and use it as a rinse after shampooing. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes, then wash off.
6. Black Tea
Black tea makes your hair shiny and soft, and helps darken it. Boil two teaspoons of black tea in one cup of water, along with a teaspoon of salt. After it cools, use the mixture to rinse your hair a few times. The final time, let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse your hair out with cold water.
7. Onion Juice
Research shows gray hair grows when hydrogen peroxide accumulates at the base of the hair follicles. To counter this, massage the scalp with onion juice. Leave it on for half an hour, then rinse off.
8. Black Sesame Seeds
Traditional Chinese medicine uses black sesame seed to counteract premature graying, as they support the production of melanin. They contain high amounts of iron, magnesium, protein, copper and phosphorous. Consume a teaspoon of the seeds every day for three months. During the same period, apply sesame oil to your hair daily.
Amaranth prevents gray hair, helps restore the natural color of hair, and is very effective against hair loss. After washing your hair, apply fresh amaranth juice to the hair and scalp, then rinse with plain water.
10. Blackstrap Molasses
Molasses provides 14 percent of the recommended daily dose of copper, which helps with pigment production.
Remember, as is often true with natural remedies, a few weeks or even months may be required before you see noticeable results.
